| The
most deadly ocean race in history took place in 1979
when 17 sailors were killed and 23 yachts were sunk
or abandoned during the famous Fastnet race. The course
started at Cowes England, went down the English Channel,
across the Irish Sea, roundeding Fastnet Rock off the
southern coast of Ireland, then back to finish at Plymouth
England. Of the more than 316 boats to start, only 128
finished.
In
this new print, John MeCray portrays the winning yacht,
Tenacious, at dawn after the severe storm from
the night before subsides. With her boom lashed down
Tenacious was able to pole out two jibs on
her double-track headstay and with a loose-footed storm
main for balance, they flew downwind, taxing helmsman
and crew to the limit. The dissipating storm clouds
and the bright dawn symbolize the most savage yacht
race of the 20th century.
